NATIONAL PROGRESS REPORT OF FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF GERMANY 1988-1990

Mapcurator Group
The Mapcurator Group within the Deutschen Gesellschaft für Kartographie met twice, with about 25 participants, during the period in question. These meetings functioned as pre-conferences to the Germans Cartographer's Conventions (Deutscher Kartographentag). In the Österreichische Nationalbibliothek, Wien, September 1989, together with the Austrian Mapcurators Group, the meeting provided an opportunity of getting acquainted with the work of the Austrian colleagues and to visit the Vienna map collections. In May 1990 the meeting took place in the University Library Göttingen. The focus was on problems of cataloguing and database research. Topics from the agenda are e.g. presentation of the cataloguing project of the Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft; online search in the map catalogue of the ETH-Library in Zürich, which tested the options of future supra-regional cooperation

Cataloguing
The cataloguing project of the Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft for the Cataloguing of Relevant Old Maps until 1850, which started in 1985, was completed in autumn 1990. It has been a cooperative effort of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, München, the Niedersächsischen Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek, Göttingen, and the Staatsbibliothek Preußischer Kulturbesitz, Berlin. The resulting ca. 120,000 map records will be part of a data-file (under the IBAS-system) in Berlin.
The Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Hamburg started 1989 with online cataloguing of the maps (IBAS- system).
The Geheime Staatsarchiv in Berlin published another volume of the catalogues of its map-holdings (Allgemeine Kartensammlung. Bearb. von W. Bliss. 1988)

Acquisitions
Some interesting donations to the Map Department of the Staatsbibliothek Preußischer Kulturbesitz have to be reported. The Georg Westermann Publishers, Braunschweig have donated the part of the cartographic archives that survived World War II with maps, atlases and reference books. Furthermore it received the map archives of the 'Continental Gummiwerke', Hannover, a publisher of road maps, atlases and city plans from 1946-1952. Holdings of the former 'Reichsamt für Landesaufnahme' were presented by its successor, the 'lnstitut für Angewandte Geodäsie'. There are, among others, 235 copper plates of the old Karte des Deutschen Reiches t:100,000 and the 'Topographische Übersichtskarte 1:200,000.

This provided the opportunity to present the department's own collection which was re-built after World War II.
