NATIONAL PROGRESS REPORT OF CATALUNYA 1988-1990

Organizing Committee LIBER 92, map curators group
An organizing committee has been created for the 8th Conference, which could be held in Barcelona in 1992 if the city's candidature and programme are approved in Paris (which has been affirmed by the LIBER-meeting. Note Secretary). This committee is made up of 8 map libraries of the Spanish State: 'lnstituto Geográfico Nacional', 'Bibtioteca Nacional', 'Servicio Geográfico del Ejército', 'Museo Naval', all from Madrid, and 'Biblioteca de Catalunya', 'Arxiu Historic de Barcelona', 'Biblioteca de la Facultat de Geologia de Ia Universitat de Barcelona' and the 'Cartoteca de Catalunya de l'Institut Cartogràfic de Catalunya', all from Barcelona.

Education of mapcurators
The 'Associació d'Arxivers de Catalunya', in conjunction with the 'Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona' has organized an Archivist Masters Degree of two years duration for postgraduates. Starting in 1989-1990 the course devotes one of its subject slots to the management of maps and plans, it being imparted by staff of the Cartoteca de Catalunya (CTC) and the Archive of the 'Corona d'Aragó'.
The 'Collegi oficial de Bibliotecaris-documentalistes' is organizing various short courses on library management techniques. This year one was organized on ISBD(CM), taught by an archivist of the CTC.

History of cartography
Courses on the history of cartography have started, organized by the CTC and the Geography Department of the 'Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona' (see progress-report 1986-1988). The 1990 course, the first of the series was a general introduction to the history of cartography and the world of map libraries, taught by Eila Campbell (retired lecturer of the University of London), Monique Pelletier (Head of the Map Department of the Bibtiothèque Nationale de France), and Montserrat Galera (Head of the section 'Cartoteca de Catalunya. lnstitut Cartografic de Catalunya'). These lectures have been published as Introducció general alla historia de la cartografia. Barcelona, Institut Cartogràfic de Catalunya, 1990. (Cicle de conferencies sobre Historia de Ia Cartografia ; 1e curs).

Universities
The Catalan universities have of late given a sound boost to their map libraries. The first was the 'Biblioteca de la Facultat de Geologia de Ia Universitat de Barcelona' which took advantage of the transfer to a new building to organize a new library in which maps figure as an important part. In 1987 the 'Estudi General de Lleida', working under the same university, opened a map library at its head office in Lleida, and in 1988 the 'Estudi General de Girona' of the 'Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona' did the same in Girona.

The Biblioteca de Catalunya
The print section of the 'Biblioteca de Catalunya' (National Library of Catalonia) received a major private collection of ancient maps of Catalonia which are at present being catalogued. We should also mention the incorporation into the section's catalogues of a major collection of atlases which are placed amongst other sections, in order to facilitate the tasks of researchers.

The Cartoteca de Catalunya Based on an acquisitions plan destined to obtain contemporary topographical cartography of the entire world, the number of maps held by the Cartoteca has grown considerably over these last two years. This has led to a reorganisation of all items, consisting of a physical redistribution of the maps in order to make full use of the space available, and in unification and computerization of the catalogues which were until now divided by sections. This operation will be concluded in 1992.
A technical advisory service has been started in the Cartoteca for other Cata!an map libraries. The first agreement has been reached with the 'Biblioteca Halaguer' in Vilanova i la Geltrú

Exhibitions
On occasion of the EUROCARTO congress the 'Spanish Society of Cartography, Photogramrnetry and Remote Sensing' organized in Majorca an Exhibition of Majorcan Cartography from the 15th to 18th centuries in cooperation with the 'Illes Balears' University. A most interesting catalogue has been published under the title EUROC4RT VIII: Exposición de cartografiá mallorquina. Madrid: Servicio Geográfico dei Ejército, 1990'
