National Progress Report for Denmark 1984-1986

Since the LIBER meeting in 1984, we have managed to farm a Danish mapcurator group under the umbrella of the Danish Cartographic Society. The constituting meeting took place in May 1986, and to undertake the practical work a committee was formed, consisting of
- Det kongelige Bibliatek / Inger Lise Nørregaard
- Rigsarkivet / Jøorgen Nybo Rasmussen
- Matrikelarkivet I Hans Ejner Jensen and Rie Brandt
The aim of the group is, among other things, to enlarge the cooperation between Danish map collections, and to make known to a wider public the contents and registration system of the collections. Topics that have already been on the agenda are:
- the LIBER meeting in Vienna (before and after)
- the preparation of a guide to Danish map collections, for which a questionnaire has been made
- display of the map collection of the Royal Library by Head Librarian Ib Rønne Kejlbo
Future topics, apart from the continued work with the guide, wi1l among other things be the cartochronology project of Imago Mundi, initiated by Tony Campbell of the British Library.
Presumably two of our national map producers, namely the Geodetic Institute and the Cadastral Service, will be united.
The Cadastral Service will be automated, featuring a computerized parcel register with easy updating facilities; a digital cadastral map base supported by new cadastral maps based on orthophotos. This poses a future legal deposit problem. What do we do, when maps no longer exist on paper? This problem has not as yet been solved in Denmark. The Cadastral Service is furthermore preparing to automate their records of cadastral maps.
As regards conservation and storage, the national archives are in the middle of rearranging their older maps and drawings into new file folders, as the old file folders didn't yield protection enough. Among the material being rearranged is the world famous collection of drawings of nava1 architecture from the 17th-19th century, deriving from the Danish Navy (See also the paper by Jørgen Nybo Rasmussen in Vienna).
Personally, I have been on a two week study tour to the British Library, Map Library, to study the automation of CM, as we plan to get automated as soon as possible, and the UK MARC is adaptable to our DanMarc format. I must say, that it was a great advantage for me, that I made so many contacts to Eng1ish colleagues through the LIBER meetings, it might be a good idea for LIBER to exchange visits and study tours.
2.6. In November 1985 Ib Rønne Kejlbo opened an exhibition in Thorshavn, Færøerne. It was based on material from the Royal Library's Map Room. and the title was Hvussu Føroyar eru teknadar a kort fra 1200 talinum og fram moti okkara døgum ('Mapping of the Faroe Islands from the 13th century until now).
