Discussion lists

GdC-discussionlist
The GdC-discussionlist is maintained by the Secretary Chris Fleet at the National Library of Scotland. It is a closed list, with the sole purpose of advancing discussions between correspondents of the GdC de LIBER on matters relating to progress in mapcuratorship in Europe. It is unmoderated, which means that all messages will be broadcast to all addresses on the list.
All known E-mail addresses of European mapcurators are added by the Secretary of the GdC de LIBER without warning given. Should anybody who receives messages from this list wants his/her address removed they are requested to contact the Secretary on c.fleet@nls.uk and request the removal.
For question of a more general or specific nature not to do with European mapcuratorship one should address one of the lists below.

MAPS-L
Maps and Air Photo Systems Forum is an American discussion list for map curators with ca. 900 subscribers. They have a world wide audience, but predominantly American traffic. There are many messages forwarded from related listservs.
This list is moderated by Johnnie Sutherland, which means that he decides which messages will be broadcast and which not.

Lis-maps
Lis-maps is a British discussion list for map curators with ca. 80 subscribers. However they would not mind if the membership is broadened a bit by European participation. This list is managed by Tinho da Cruz, but not moderated, which means that all messages will be broadcast to all subscribers.

GIS4LIB
GIS4LIB is an email list for discussion of issues relating to geographic information systems (GIS) and libraries, whether academic, private, corporate, etc. Any issues related to GIS and libraries can be discussed, such as "How do I ..."; "Where can I find ..."; "What do I need to do ..."; "I would like to share ..."; etc. Topics may include discussion of hardware, software, data acquisition, licensing, collection development, etc.

MapHist
MapHist, the Map History Discussion List, is an e-mail discussion group whose primary focus is historical maps, atlases, globes and other cartographic documents. The list is open to all persons interested in the history of cartography and discussion is encouraged on all aspects of this broad subject.
The primary purpose of MapHist is to encourage individuals to communicate current research; evaluate methods and tools of analysis; announce important acquisitions and news; announce position vacancies; announce new publications; investigate library holdings; and to share information between conferences and the appearance of relevant journals.
This list is managed by David Cobb, but not moderated, which means that all messages will be broadcast to all subscribers.

Under this title Map History / History of Cartography - THE Gateway to the Subject you'll find a homepage which is solely concerned with the history of cartography or the study of early maps.
The page is aimed at anyone, whether specialist or browser, who is potentially interested in non-current maps and wants to know how to find out more about them. The aim is to make this THE gateway to the subject. It comprises both a GENERAL GUIDE to the various aspects of map history and LINKS TO RELEVANT WEB SITES. There are no images. This is one of the few nationally-funded, subject-based gateways on the Internet.

Roadmaps-L
Roadmaps is an internet mailing list devoted to road map collectors, researchers, producers, and dealers. Subscribers are encouraged to use the list to ask questions, arrange trades, and publicize events related to the road map collecting hobby. A digest option is also available.

There is also a European website (bi-lingual, but mainly French) Cartes Routieres Anciennes/Old Road Maps, which concerns itself mainly with the European history of road maps.

CARTO-SOC
CARTO-SOC is a discussion list for all aspects of cartography. It is run by the Society of Cartographers (British), but anyone is welcome to subscribe. The Society of Cartographers was founded in 1964 (as the Society of University cartographers), and has as its object the fostering and encouraging of the study of cartography in all its aspects, and in particular promoting and maintaining high standards of cartographic illustration.
