What should map curators be doing in actively exploiting recent technological developments in imaging and Internet technology? How and why should they be making digital images of their materials available externally? This conference would focus on the creation, development, and maintenance of new virtual collections by map libraries, and consider the problems that need to be addressed for these projects to be successful. Providing effective access to such images will be a central concern, as will the gathering and organising of textual information. A number of particular sub-themes will be covered:
Joint Meeting
As the conference has been organised to run simultaneously with the main LIBER conference, we will be holding a joint meeting on Friday 30 June with the theme "Mapping the virtual information landscape". This will concentrate on common concerns that map curators share with their library colleagues in providing access to WWW collections, and their special skills and techniques that could benefit non-cartographic collections. The following themes will be addressed:
We have also been kindly invited by the LIBER Board to the Opening Reception of the main LIBER Annual Conference on 27 June, and to the main exhibition and product reviews which will take place from Tuesday 27 June to Thursday 29 June.
The conference will be organised by the Map Department of the Royal Library in Copenhagen. The conference organiser is Mr Henrik Dupont.
Conference languages will be English, German and French.
The programme includes map exhibitions, posters, as well as demonstrations by institutions and manufacturers.
Papers offered should bear on one of the above subjects.
Offers for papers should be send to the Henrik Dupont and state: name, function, and full paper title. The offer should be accompanied by an abstract of between 150 and 250 words.
When a paper is offered which is not selected to be read at the conference it will still be published with the proceedings of the conference.
Map curators from Central- and Eastern Europe who want to participate in the conference, but who have trouble financing travel and/or accommodation are requested to write to the conference co-ordinator:
Mr Henrik DupontHowever, the Danish Organising Committee cannot guarantee that requests will be met.
