The conference will be organized by the Map Department of Jagiellonian Library in Kraków in co-operation with the Polish Map Curators Group. Co-ordinator is Dr. Jadwiga Bzinkowska of the Jagiellonian Library.
Conference languages will be English, German and French.
The programme includes map exhibitions, posters, as well as demonstrations by institutions and manufacturers.
Technology in map collections: a means or an end? concerns itself with the impact of technology on everyday practises in map libraries and easing or burdening the workload of map curators. This can be translated into two broad problem fields: (A) 'How to cope with digital spatial data (either original or digitized) and deriving new user services' and (B) 'How can (digital) technology aid in the management of collections'.
(A) Problems concerning digital spatial data and user services revolve around the following subjects:
(B) Problems concerning management revolve around the following subjects:
From the 10th conference we can add the special items of the 'interavailability of materials' (electronic documents can be held anywhere within an institution) and the role national libraries and archives have in the acquisition of electronic materials.
Roelof Oddens of Utrecht University, who upkeeps the Internet-site Odden's Bookmarks, the facsinating world of maps and mapping with over 5,000 hyperlinks (May 1998) would like a discussion about how to regionally/thematically divide the workload of upkeeping this site and how to documentate the hyperlinks.
Papers offered should bear on one of the above subjects.
Offers for papers should be send to the Conference-Director (Dr. Jadwiga Bzinkowska) and state: name, function, full title of paper. The offer should be accompanied by an abstract of between 150 and 250 words.
When a paper is offered which is not selected to be read at the conference it still will be published with the proceedings of the conference.
Though participants in the last conference in Berlin, 1996, requested more workshop-like session, the Board did not find possibilities to organize these mainly because there were not enough diverging papers offered which could be used to set up discussions. However, the Board will try to set up a general discussion concerning the overall theme during the 5th Working session.
Institutions or a group of institutions are invited to offer to host the 13th conference of 2002. Offers should be made during the LIBER-meeting on September 15, 1998. Information on organizing a conference can be obtained from the Secretary, Jan Smits (Koninklijke Bibliotheek, SKD, P.O. Box 90.407, 2509 LK The Hague, The Netherlands).
Map curators from Central- and Eastern Europe who want to participate in the conference, but who have trouble financing travel and/or accommodation are requested to write to the Conference-Director:
